the only thing i've ever done that mattered much at all

     is bring you into the world, watch you grow up true and tall

          i saw you draw your first breath, saw the wonder in your eyes

               and by your side i've come to find what god must have in mind

the only thing that troubles me as i look in your eyes

     is knowing there are other children suffering tonight

          seems to me there is more than plenty of love to go around

               if we would only share with them the love that we have found

pray for every baby born in poverty and pain

     for every baby born without the love we give you today

          pray for every baby born in misery and shame

               for every baby born in hopelessness, without his father's name

surely we are wise enough to see this cannot stand

       surely we have love enough to offer out our hand
